At the national level, the extent of the areas with potentials for aquaculture is estimated at 15.59 million hectares, composed of 2.23 million hectares of freshwater bodies, 1.22 million hectares of brackishwater areas and 12.14 million hectares of marine areas. To date, only 10.1% of freshwater, 40% of brackishwater and 0.01% of marine areas potentially suitable for aquaculture, are in use.
